A Clinical Study on Children Visiting Emergency Room with Abdominal Pain



Abstract
A clinical study was made in 281 children who visited the emergency room, Korea University, Ccllege of Medicine, Heahwa Hospital with abdominal pain from July 1985 to June 1986. The results were as follows:
1. Children visiting the emergency room with abdominal pain occupied 9.8% of total"children visiting the emergency room and 32% of patients with abdominal pain were admitted. 2. The highest age incidence was in 6-10 years of age (24.9%).
3. The sex incidence revealed male predominance with the ratio of 1.6:1.
4. Of 281 cases, the incidence of common causative diseases were as follows: constipation 4 cases (14 6%), intussusception 40 cases (14.2%), acute appendicitis 33 cases (11.7%), upper respiratory infection 40 cases (14.2%). In admitted cases, intussusception and acute appendicitis were and in not-admitted
cases, constipation, URI, and acute gastroenterocolitis were common diseases developing abdominal pain.
5. The highest incidence of diseases according to age in admitted cases were as follows: 0-1 years of age, intussusception (80.6%); 1-2 years of age, intussusception (66.7%); 2-6 years of age, acute appendicitis (27.3%); 6-10 years of age, acute appendicitis (36.7%); 10-15 years of age, acute appendicitis (50.0%).
6. Ill-defined cases occupied 19.9% in not-admitted cases and in these cases, the location of abdominal pain was mainly periumbilical (44.7%).
